DUX QUEST

THE DANGERS OF DUX QUEST

Dux Quest is a plastic piping product used in New Zealand homes from the late 1970s to early 1980s, primarily made from polybutylene. Although initially popular as a replacement for copper pipes, it is now known for widespread failures. The pipes are black, often with “Qest Dux” printed on them, though this can wear off.

A major issue is that polybutylene reacts with chlorine in tap water, causing the pipes to corrode and joints to weaken, which can lead to leaks or sudden pipe bursts. Many of these pipes are hidden within walls, making leaks difficult to detect early and resulting in extensive damage to floors, walls, and ceilings.

Due to these problems, insurance companies often refuse to cover damage caused by Dux Quest pipes, making repairs costly. Homeowners frequently attempt to fix only the leaking section, but this is temporary, as the rest of the pipe is likely to fail later.

The widespread failures make this product a red flag for property buyers, as its presence can lead to costly repairs and insurance issues.

Given the risks, replacing these pipes entirely is recommended, despite the expense, to prevent further damage and liability.
